Swimming away

A WhatsApp chat about swimming with diabetes tech, including pods and sensors, led to a comment being made by Helen about enjoying open water swimming.

It turned into a more detailed conversation during a group meet-up and an invitation was accepted by Faye to join Helen and her regular swim buddies to try it out.

They picked a great day weather-wise and the lake didn’t feel too cold after such a warm summer. Glucose levels were sensibly checked beforehand, basal rates were adjusted and 45 minutes of leisurely swimming, chatting and watching the wildlife later, they emerged smiling.

Both then headed straight for their phones to scan and luckily had decent post-exercise glucose results!

Doing exercise with someone who totally understood the quirks and complexity of type 1 diabetes was a delight.

Faye has swum with Helen on a couple of occasions since and has met other frequent swimmers at Stoney Cove too. Tow floats and a new swimming kit have been purchased so it’s definitely a newfound hobby, thanks this group!

For anyone interested, Stoney Cove is in Leicestershire and is a former quarry. It’s now a spring fed lake and dive centre with on-shore facilities and has a 1,000-metre perimeter course.
